Community is actively embodied for all of us in the Holy Trinity. The gift that we are given as Christians is to join the community. Our goal at SYI is to live out the community in flesh that we experience by grace through faith in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Title: “The Curse of Awesome”
Context: We use this training every year with our staff. It is the way we foster Christian Community throughout the program.
The Curse of Awesome is a story that describes two different styles of leadership through the characters of Jonny Awesome and Baxter Background. We foster Christian Community at SYI by modeling Christian Community in our staff. This story describes how and why we do so. (see the book at this link)
Effectiveness of the Practice:
For years, Derek has shared this story at staff training. Each year we are shocked by how the staff latch onto it and use it to shape the community of SYI. It is effective because in a community where everyone is built up, the community naturally thrives.
